Drink driver jailed after he ran over cyclist (Surrey Police)Cyclist run over by drink driver in shocking footage released by police after man jailed
This footage, released by Surrey Police, shows the shocking moment a cyclist in her 70s was struck and run over by a driver four times over the drink driving limit in Surrey.
Steven Selwood has been jailed for two years and three months at Guildford Crown Court for this incident, described as "harrowing" by the police force, in Haslemere on 12 May 2022 which saw him knock the rider off her bike before continuing to drive his vehicle over her as she lay seriously injured in the road.
This harrowing footage shows the dangers posed by those who drive whilst under the influence. You are putting your life and the lives of others at risk.

The 43-year-old, a former professional cricketer who played for Middlesex and Derbyshire in the early 2000s, was convicted of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving whilst over the prescribed alcohol limit, and has been disqualified from driving for three years.
Surrey Police reports Selwood was driving onto West Street from a car park when he failed to give way, hitting the cyclist, failing to see her in broad daylight. Selwood then, shockingly, continued to drive over the woman as a passing van driver ran from his vehicle trying to get the drunk driver's attention.
As another passer by ran to the scene from the car park Selwood had just driven out of, he fled in his vehicle, before walking back to the scene where he was identified by witnesses and arrested.
The victim suffered "life-changing physical and mental injuries" but allowed Surrey Police to share the footage as a warning to others of the potential consequences of drink driving.
"Not a night goes by without nightmares," she said in a victim impact statement. "My life has changed considerably since I was knocked down off my cycle. I used to be outgoing, talking a lot to others, going to church, back-packing. I did my own DIY and gardening.
"I was never frightened of traffic like I am today, absolutely terrified with a strong feeling it's going to happen again. My worst fear now is that my left leg will not hold me up through weakness which is happening more so these days plus my mental state is not too good. I don't laugh anymore. I get overwhelmed with the everyday occurrences, not being able to deal with multiple issues."
Investigating officer, sergeant Joe McGregor called the footage "shocking" and said he hopes it serves as a "stark reminder of the dangers posed by those who choose to drink and drive".
"The victim would like to express her gratitude to the members of the public who stopped Selwood's vehicle," he added. "The victim in this case has been left with lifelong physical and mental scars and has bravely said she wants her case to be a warning to anyone who thinks that it is acceptable to drive whilst under the influence. It isn't. You are putting your life and the lives of others at risk.
"Alcohol limits are there for a reason and if you know someone is driving while over the limit or after taking drugs, then call 999."

'knock the rider off her bike before continuing to drive his vehicle over her as she lay seriously injured in the road'.. I'm fairly sure that the serious injuries were the result of him driving over her.. the bump and fall prior to being driven over didn't cause those injuries.
Another perfect example of why the punishment for this level of driving needs to be much more severe. What's the saying? With great power comes great responsibility? Well many of the drivers in the UK seem to think they bear no responsibility for their actions whatsoever.
Morning drinks? Nice. I thought I should only worry during nightime.
Seriously now, when there is such clear proof, a life driving ban would be appropriate.
Not that it makes much odds or mitigates the offence in the slightest but the timestamp on the video is 16:14.
You are right, but still kind of amazes me that people manage to get drunk before night arrives.
Quite common at weddings and other events.
Nowt wrong with enjoying a nice bottle of wine or a few pints with your Sunday roast either, provided you don't touch a car or a bike afterwards. People do have funny attitudes to it though, I've known quite a few people who were religious about not drinking before 6 pm but were fine with having half a dozen pints after the threshold who would regard someone who had a couple of pints at lunchtime and nothing to drink in the evening as being a potential problem drinker.
Maybe an unpopular opinion, but riding an acoustic bike after a few drinks is unlikely to cause much of an issue. It's self-limiting in that you're likely to fall off if you're too drunk and that teaches an important lesson about your judgement when drunk.
Some of my best nights out, back in the day started off at lunch time, on the odd occasion before lunch.

He'll be out in less than 18 months. It should be a much longer sentence.

The problem with this solace is that drivers like him know that the punishment for driving without insurance, licence and/ or MOT is just another driving ban for them to ignore.
That suggests that it's not a ban for rich people - I'd rather that driving licenses are permanently removed from people that have demonstrated that they can't be trusted on the roads.
A life ban would be appropriate. He shouldn't be allowed behind the wheel again.
Sadly even with a lifetime there's no guarantee that he won't get behind the wheel.
It's better to have him banned than being allowed to drive though.
Where had he been before running her over? Cricket club, one for the road? Golf club? Pub? Why are we still serving alcohol to drivers? I mention sports clubs because people seem to behave as though they have imunity.
Haslemere being my town there plenty of talk, and my understanding is he was coaching kids all morning. hopefully a DBS check was required as there's no way I'd want him around my family.
There's now a sign at the exit of the car park (that's what the driver was leaving) reminding drivers to give way, but that's not much use if you're too pissed to read.
It's also about a minute of commited pedalling from the site of NMOTD 807, and about 5 minutes from where I was rear ended and had my wrist broken.
The circumstances that cause someone to be drunk behind the wheel on a mid-week afternoon should surely be investigated. Was it a one-off, or a pattern of behaviour where earlier opportunities to stop them were missed?

The punishment in no way reflects the crime.
presumably there was a reduction in sentencing for an early guilty plea, and the max is only 5 years for the charge, so it might have been near the top end of what the sentencing allowed, Im sure the review into road charges will soon look into this

I hope not- what we need is Extra sentencing for people who fail to plead guilty when their vile actions are filmed and they are caught red-handed. Maximum sentence is what he deserves, and the prosecution should be calling for review of the sentence. Even deliberately driving over somebody with both axles is being shrugged off here
Why no life ban?
I'm ambivalent about jail time but for victims everywhere knowing that he'll never drink and drive again would be a comfort.

I'd settle for a minimum 10 year ban, with the threat of an immediate custodial sentence if breached.
Judges in this country would rather give any punishment, even the death penalty, than give a life ban.

Exactly. I never understand these tiny driving bans. Jail time costs money (and has no benefit in this case?) whereas a driving ban has only upsides.
