Alé Cycling PRR Ponente Jersey

Alé's PRR Ponente Jersey might be pricey but it puts in an excellent performance if you're after a slim-cut option for the hot weather.

The PRR Ponente is a lightweight polyester/elastane jersey with perforated front panels that let lots of air in and moisture out. The tops of the arms/shoulders are made from the same breathable fabric. The jersey as a whole wicks sweat well and dries fast when it does get damp.

The camlock zip helps you avoid that. It's full length so you can open it right up – the full Voeckler – to avoid roasting on long climbs in high temperatures. A guard at the bottom of the zip stops it catching on your shorts. It's a small touch but a useful one.

The cut is slim and there's a whole lot of stretch in all directions, particularly in the front panels and around the shoulders, so you can get a close fit without feeling claustrophobic in there. Adding to the comfort, all of the seams are flat stitched, the ones at the sides of the back being reflective to help you get noticed in car headlights if you're out at night.

The front hem and the ends of the sleeves feature what Alé call their 'J Stability System'. Essentially, they use an elastic fabric here to hold everything in place. I'm not sure it warrants its own technical-sounding name but it works fine, as does the silicone strip inside the elasticated gripper around the back.

The tops of the three rear pockets are elasticated too to help keep everything inside and you get a fourth zipped pocked back there that's big enough to take a smartphone.

£115 is a lot to pay for a jersey – you don't need me to tell you that – but if you have that kind of money to drop on kit, this is an excellent choice for hot weather riding.

Costly, sure, but this slim-cut jersey puts in an excellent performance in the hot weather
