Making up one third of the ZeroRH+ helmet range (along with the ZR and the recently reviewed ZW), the Zero RH ZX Helmet promises premium head protection with good looks and build quality to match.
The ZX is available in two sizes; S/M (54-58cm) and L/XL (58-61)cm. With a head circumference of 56cm, the S/M fitted me perfectly - benefiting from the offering of narrower sizing brackets compared to cheaper alternatives. This helps to give the helmet a nice close fit that is apparent in both looks and feel.
The inner-cage is made from injected plastic and co-moulded to the polystyrene of the helmet, which ZeroRH+ say gives it significantly greater mechanical strength and a more stylish look. It definitely scores highly for the latter, with a nice sweeping shape striking the perfect balance between angular and smooth contours that makes for a tastefully understated design.
At 245g, it's a decent weight, but with the excellent ventilation on offer, it's easy to forget it's on anyway. There are 22 very well sized and shaped vents for the warm weather, but the helmet has worked equally well paired with my varied collection of warm hats and cycling caps.
Comfort and fit are key for helmet purchasing, and the ZX doesn't disappoint. It has a deep shell - meaning no perching - and the relatively low sitting gives the helmet an assured feel in use. The 'Power Fit' dial allows fine-tuning, and is attached to lateral straps that allow some vertical adjustment; sitting low enough to grip your lower cranium securely. The dial and straps are both soft touch plastic, which is just that bit more pleasant on skin/hair, as well as easier to grip. In keeping with the rest of the helmet, the adjustable straps and buckles are comfortable, low bulk, and tidy. There's even a small removable chin pad.
On the outside, the paint and decals are neat and tidy and there is very little exposed EPS foam, which should increase longevity. A subtle but effective white reflective strip of runs along the far sides, adding some decent night visibility from the side and rear. Inside, almost all the accessible surface area is covered with ultra thin padding, adding a touch of cushioning and helping to absorb sweat. The padding is handily all in one piece too, and easily removed for washing.
In typical ZeroRH+ styling, the ZX is available in 3 colours: red and white matte, black and white matte, and all white matte. There's also a special edition with black on black matte. The all over non-glossy finish does offer something a little different, and I certainly enjoyed it.
Verdict
Offers an excellent combination of fit, comfort, and understated style.
