John has been writing about bikes and cycling for over 30 years since discovering that people were mug enough to pay him for it rather than expecting him to do an honest day's work.
He was heavily involved in the mountain bike boom of the late 1980s as a racer, team manager and race promoter, and that led to writing for Mountain Biking UK magazine shortly after its inception. He got the gig by phoning up the editor and telling him the magazine was rubbish and he could do better. Rather than telling him to get lost, MBUK editor Tym Manley called John’s bluff and the rest is history.
Since then he has worked on MTB Pro magazine and was editor of Maximum Mountain Bike and Australian Mountain Bike magazines, before switching to the web in 2000 to work for CyclingNews.com. Along with road.cc founder Tony Farrelly, John was on the launch team for BikeRadar.com and subsequently became editor in chief of Future Publishing’s group of cycling magazines and websites, including Cycling Plus, MBUK, What Mountain Bike and Procycling.
John has also written for Cyclist magazine, edited the BikeMagic website and was founding editor of TotalWomensCycling.com before handing over to someone far more representative of the site's main audience.
He joined road.cc in 2013. He lives in Cambridge where the lack of hills is more than made up for by the headwinds.

I used to have the Spoon on my old hybrid but when I up graded I got rid of the stock saddle and got myself the Charge Knife. Best decision I made.
I struggled finding a saddle that fitted for ages, going through 12 in 3yrs!
Managed to find one of the new a Specialized Toupe S-works on ebay for only £50 and haven't looked back, very comfortable, and is slightly better padded than the other Toupes, but even at 143mm is only 170g.
Would probably replace with a Fizik Antares vs, as not paying £200 for the S-works.
Bizarrely the scoop is the only saddle I've had that was bad enough to give me sores.... just shows they really are an individual choice.
Damn right. I got a Ti railed Scoop with my Synapse but I had a wee bit of a slide at 50kmh and the tarmac belt-sanded one side flat
Didn't think twice about getting another one to replace it and now I have the carbon railed version. Best saddle I've ever had.
Can you please tell me which scoop you tried with the Synapse. I've got the Scoop Radius but I'm wondering if the "Shallow" would be better for the Synapse riding position.
Thanks
"Perineal favourite" surely
No mention of Selle Italia is a surprise.
I only came to see which was the best selle saddle, I've had fizik and spesh which didn't suit me. The charge spoon works on the mtb
FWIW, I liked both my Brooks (Brookses?) from day 1.
They started out "extremely comfortable" and only got better
Fabric scoop is very comfy but mine has developed a creak due to the loose fit between the base and the rails. Not terrible but a bit annoying
I'm getting an odd clicking on my bike with a Scoop on it. It stops when I stand up, so I'm sure it's saddle/seatpost related. I've cleaned and greased the rails but I suppose it could be the join with the base... Maybe I'll swap it for a Spoon, which I've got on my other two bikes.
mine is definitely the base, I can rock the saddle from side to side with my hands.
glad to see the B17 and B17N get in there... but where's the B67? and the flyer models?
