Trek-Segafredo’s custom painted bikes for the Tour of California

Team race bikes are usually painted in the colours of the main sponsor, but custom painted bikes seem to be increasingly common. Usually, a custom painted bike will be produced to match a national champions jersey, the holder of the yellow jersey in the Tour de France is a popular reason for a yellow bike, and sometimes it’s just to reflect the personality of the bigger stars like Fabian Cancellara or Peter Sagan.

Custom painted bikes for every member of a race team is a rare sight, but Trek has done just that at the Tour of California. As a way of promoting its Project One custom programme, a website that lets you choose from a range of unique paint schemes and build your dream bike, each of the Trek-Segafredo racers is racing a special bike inspired by the “California sun and surf theme, with a color palette and finish personalized to the style of the individual rider.” No flames though…

And these specially commissioned frames aren’t just team issue, they’re available to buy through the Project One website. You can then build up the frame with any components you want, or stick with the team equipment of Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 with Bontrager wheels and finishing kit if you want a race replica.
