Scope Cycling is a Dutch bicycle wheel brand that launched last year with the R5C carbon clincher wheelset, which road.cc reviewed and found to offer good performance and braking. It has now followed up those wheels with its first disc brake wheel carbon fibre rim, and there are updates to its rim brake wheelsets too.

“The development of our new disc brake series took us way more time than expected since no compromises have been accepted. It has been imperative to keep with the Scope standards,” says Nieck Busser, co-founder of Scope Cycling.
The disc brake wheelsets have been designed from the outset to make the most of the disc benefits, the company saying it has optimised the aerodynamics, stiffness and weight for the rim. The rims are tubeless compatible and measure 26mm wide externally and 19mm internally.
It has also updated its rim brake wheelsets, with improved braking performance, better aerodynamics and stiffness. They’ve also reduced the weight, one of the criticisms road.cc levelled at the wheels in the review a year ago, by modifying the carbon fibre layup. The wheels are offered in a choice of rim depths, including 30, 45 and 55mm.
To improve the aero performance of both the rim brake and disc brake wheels, the company has worked with the Technical Universities in the Netherlands and employed computational fluid dynamic software, and focused on reducing crosswind influence from a wider range of angles.
Scope tells road.cc it has tested the new wheels against three industry leading aerodynamic wheel brands (but doesn’t want to reveal the exact brands tested) and says the new R5c rims offers 15% less drag and 5% less crosswind influence.
It claims to have benchmarked against premium brands and found its rims to outperform them, but it provides no comparative data to back up this claim.
The new and updated Scope Cycling wheels will be available this year, and they’re all priced £1,999. Scope Cycling wheels are distributed by Oneway Distribution in the UK. More info at www.scopecycling.com
