A bike fit for £25? MyVeloFit promises quick and affordable fitting from your own home with AI-powered tool

To improve comfort and efficiency on the bike, MyVeloFit uses smartphone video and AI to analyse your ride position

Tech startup MyVeloFit is launching “the world’s first AI powered online bike fit”. The bike fitting tool for cyclists is designed to check your riding position at home, and provides recommended adjustments in a more convenient and accessible package than visiting a bike fitter, according to MyVeloFit.

> Should you get a bike fit? The 9 pitfalls to avoid

The video-based motion capture bike fit service promises that no prior knowledge is required, and using artificial intelligence the service is said to help cyclists uncover actionable insights about their riding position that they can use to improve comfort and efficiency on the bike.

MyVeloFit says it uses proprietary “motion tracking and human pose estimation” to assess cyclists’ mobility and bike position, with just a few videos recorded on and off the bike.

“Our technology is designed to first assess you and your individual abilities in terms of flexibility and mobility, then assess your position on the bike to make quality recommendations on your optimal position,” says MyVeloFit.

“The technology behind MyVeloFit has been designed to identify the same body segments that professional bike fitters measure to determine your position on the bike.”

Fit reviews are then carried out by expert fitter Jesse Jarjour who holds certifications from Retul, Trek Precision Fit, and has a level 3 certification from the International Bike Fitting Institute.

Recommendations are given and said to be based on a machine learning model built on a database of over one billion data points, taken from thousands of fit sessions.

“Our margin for error is within that of the leading fit systems,” MyVeloFit claims.

Unlike many other fit tools, MyVeloFit requires no additional equipment and claims to provide high-quality results with as little as a mobile phone video.

MyVeloFit says it is focused on providing a good fit, not selling products.

“We're here to provide an accurate fit assessment and that's it. We have no interest in using bike fit as part of a sales process.”

Bike fits are worthwhile for increasing comfort and reducing the chance of injury.

As an avid road and track racer, she reached the heady heights of a ProCyclingStats profile before leaving for university. Having now completed an MA in Multimedia Journalism, she’s hoping to add some (more successful) results. Although her greatest wish is for the broader acceptance of wearing funky cycling socks over the top of leg warmers.

How does the app deal with camera distortion?

I had a proper bike fit from Paul Hewitt once, and that worked very well. I then took various measurements from that bike to assess the suitability of later bikes. On the other hand, when I bought my Vitus gravel bike (dare I admit to buying one of those now?- it was Novermber 2019, though) I just ordered a M, Chain Reaction built it up perfectly, and it was fine from the first ride after setting the saddle. I'm lucky being Mr Average M.

Despite the naysayers below, I'm going to give it a try. It's cheap, sure, but there's also a free option which will at least give an indication of whether or not it's worth the money. Even if it turn out to be a waste, I've wasted a good deal more on cycling purchases down the years, so no biggie!

The only bike fitter with any credentials in my area moved on so now it seems every local bike shop owner and his dog has started offering the service - at great expense and with absolutely no qualifications to back up the service other than they sell bikes. Each to their own but having had one myself several years ago which made no difference whatsoever I can't help thinking this is another way of parting a fool from their money.

As anyone who has a decent bike fit from a reputable fitter will tell you, part of the whole process is telling you home truths you may not want to hear but they tell you to make sure you're fitted correctly. I was told I was doing all sorts of things wrong with my pedal stroke and my posture. Stuff a computer In its own using a few motion frames isn't going to pick up. Nothing will replace the critical eye of a professional telling you what you are doing wrong.

So you dont think that a computer can be good enough to quickly analyse something do you?  They manage to fly helicoptrs, airplanes and lots of other tasks which need split second decisions based on an analysis of a situation and which they can do better than most humans.  I am not convinced with bike fits myself (see York_M's comments about huge variances between human anaysis and solutions) but if you are inclined to use one then surely £25 isnt a bad price to pay, you probably spend that every month on coffee and cakes on your rides (when the cafes are open).

That's very very true, however there are so many useless fitters out there that a lot can't give you that detailed experience.

I'm interested in this as a bit of a sense check every few months. Also, I'd like to do a "fit" before and after a hard 100k ride to see how much my fatigue effected the position.

It is all bananas. My two bike fits were 30mm apart in seat height. 30mm!!

Im back to heel on the pedal with my club mates and front of kneecap directly over pedal axle. I really think it is taken money from the uninitiated

The useful thing about a bike fit in a shop, especially with an in store jig is you can try incremental changes and see how they feel without having to spend out on anything. If this recommends a different stem length and angle, I order one and then find that it's too extreme etc it's going to be a lot more hassle than having gone and had a fit in the first place.

On balance, I think going to a shop for a fit is going to prove a whole lot easier than finding somewhere amongst the boxes in my garage that I can put the phone where it'll get a decent shot of me on the turbo...
