Cavendish win gets his season going

I suppose it was always going to end this way. Having bored people at work to tears with how difficult Els Angels was and how the Volta a Catalunya was going over the first category mountain on Tuesday, I was definitely setting myself up for a fall.

Even thought the summit was 80km plus from the finish in Banyoles I proclaimed with supreme confidence "A true climber will win this stage, the climb is very hard".

Cue huge red cheeks (both sets!) when Mark Cavendish sprinted over the line to win the stage and open his 2010 account...

Doh!!

Of course I was delighted for the Manxman and I hope that this duck-breaking performance is the start of another glittering season for Cav.... But part of me was gutted that my self created mystique about this climb to a church and weather station evaporated just over a week after my tortured ascent up it.

I suppose you could have seen it coming though. Cavendish had hung in there until the last throws of Milan-San Remo over the weekend and certainly showed great determination only dropping back in the last half hour of racing.

If he could have hung on over the Cipressa and Poggio he would have beaten Oscar Friere and Tom Boonen in the sprint, I am sure of that.

So its back to fens for me this weekend on my new singlespeed, more of which to come in the near future.
