New bike advice - B'twin Ultra 920 af

Hello all,

I recently had my B'twin Triban 540 stolen after 18 months of happy use (commuting in London mon-fri and then longer rides of 30-50k at weekends) and as a result I am in the market for a new bike.

I am mildly serious about cycling and want to keep up riding weekly and improving mileage, with potential sportives and cycling trips too. That said I am looking for something under £1000, so not looking for anything too high spec or that I would feel uncomfortable commuting in London on too.

I found the Triban 540 to be excellent value (shimano 105s, mavic aksiums etc for £650) and so I am tempted to now move up to the Ultra 920 AF - which is currently £999 amd comes with full Ultegra R8000 and Mavic Cosmic Elite wheels. (https://www.cyclingweekly.com/reviews/road-bikes/btwin-ultra-920-af )

This seems like fantastic value to me, but I wondered if the cycling community would advise looking at any other bikes, as I know B'twin are not the sexiest brand, and may have downsides I am unaware of. Is there any reason i should be looking at other more established brands at similar prices but with seemingly much lower specs? I personally am not overly fussed about branding for the sake of it, would much rather a great riding bike. I just wondered if there might be a catch or something I'm missing/unaware of..

any advice welcome!

Thanks both, and yes the 540 came with a compact 52/36, which I had no problems with at all. Noted on mudguards and panniers!

Many thanks

Nope, it's a cracking bike and usually Decathlon service is excellent so you've got good aftersales support for adjustments/warranty.

Couple of things though - can't remember, did the 540 come with a compact chainset? The 920 is 52/36 and easiest gear is a 36/32. Might be an issue?

Also, no mudguard or pannier mounts for commuting.

Nope, no catch. Just brand caché.
