Hi csacwp,
I think that it's very hard to say which is the best bike for you to get because this is a very subjective choice and all in the eye of the beholder.
No doubt for the right person in the right situation both could be great bikes but for me if I had to choose between the two it would have to be the Fairlight Secan everyday of the week because I love the entire Fairlight range and think that they offer great bikes with well thoughtout design and spec including a big factor for me which is their proportional geometry principles to help provide a frame which fits more people.

Whatever choice that you make I hope that you enjoy your new bike!

I think the Lauf is as ugly as sin, but a friend has one and he absolutely loves it.
I disagree that carbon is soulless. My current carbon bike is simply the best bike I have ever owned (and I've had some pretty fine steel handbuilt italian jobs in the past) and riding it fills me with joy. It's a different thing to steel, but no less wonderful in my opinion.
You're comparing carbon to steel here so that's bound to get a bit controversial but personally I prefer steel, I find carbon very soulless. As you can tell from my user name, I ride a Fairlight Strael and I absolutely love it so I think a Secan would be an extremely enjoyable bet.
