Obviously the "no visible serial number" description has changed, now that I've cleared off the BB shell.
If you repeat all this info in the Classic Road forum at retrobike.co.uk you might find someone who can help.
Already posted there, and other places. Thanks for trying to help identify it.

I know what you mean - looks brutal. It's powdercoat, so it'll just burn right off. I restore bikes as a hobby, so repainting it and getting original decals on will be fun for me. I appreciate the empathy tho'.
