Just finish my Project 2020, what are your achievements this year? Plans for the New Year?

Nearly two years ago I had never ridden 10,000km a year and was coming close but failing. I devised a plan to ride 20,200km in 2019+2020. I guess I figured I had a better chance of passing 10KK even if I missed this target. I did 9000km last year, but I did over 1200km a month in the summer. I guess it helped I had no movies to see, no garden parties to go to, no holidays to go on. I have only done about 500km this month as I was getting close the rain and cold was off putting. on Monday I crawled over the line with a trip to the supermarket. 20200km, project complete.

As I didn't get to do any sportives or other events with 'people' (remember those?) I was mainly on Strava. I sought out and KOM'd a segment with over 10,000 riders, It turned out to be 15K, but I've been after a big prize for a while. I've used Veloviewer to find every segment I've ridden within 20K of home that have more riders and they are all hopelessly out of my reach, climbs not sprints. So I've rather maxed out on that.

That is about it for the year. I didn't get to go to the Roma Gran Fondo as I hoped, but maybe 2022 (looks like most events are off for 21, and Ride London 100 seems like it will never return or be radically different if it does.) I am hoping the event on the Isle of Man will still go ahead in the summer, if they vaccine can roll out.

So what have you achieved in this most peculiar year. Please blow your own trumpet!

It sounds like you used your time well.

I've had 10,000 km in my mind for a couple of years. Managed 9,419 km in 2020, an annual distance PB. Despite a slow start due to the weather in Feb I worked through lockdown and clocked up 7,337km of commuting and 2,082 km on rides. Between the good weather and the quiet roads I should have done more and longer rides but there were too many weeks when I felt I needed to chill out or just go for a walk after being busy at work.

In 2017 I joined the Metric Century Challenge on the bikeradar forum (ride at least one 100km per month), got as far as October. I intend to try again in 2021 and in the process ride some longer hilly routes around the Welsh borders that I've had in my mind for a while. In the process I hope to get past the 10,000km as well.

"So what have you achieved in this most peculiar year".

My achievement was that every mile I rode was on the road, not a pretend distance done on an exercise bike.  I missed my target of riding 183 rides (half of the days in the leap year) by one ride, icy roads prevented me getting my last ride in and the virus prevented my 3 day trip to France to watch the tour.
