Tour de Yorkshire Stage 2: Moreno Hofland takes the sprint for LottoNL-Jumbo

Dutch rider first past the post at finish at York racecourse

LottoNL-Jumbo sprinter Moreno Hofland has won Stage 2 of the Tour de Yorkshire, winning a bunh sprint on a stage that finished next to York Racecourse. Team Sky's Lars-Petter Nordhaug retains the race lead.

The Dutch rider beat IAM's Matteo Pelucchi into second place, with Giant Alpecin's Ramon Sinkeldam third in the finish on the Knavesmire of the 174km stage from Selby.

Big crowds greeted the race in all the towns it went through, and while the finish was outside the centre of York, the city's medieval streets were thronged as people turned out in their thousands to watch the race go by.

The stage finished with two loops around York of a 20.5 kilometre circuit, with the last survivor of the day's break, Giant-Alpenin's Bert de Backer, swept up just inside the final kilometre.

BMC's Greg van Avermaet then attacked but he too was swept up ahead of the final sprint.

The race concludes with tomorrow's 167km stage from Wakefield to Leeds.
