British Cycling riders injured by car on training ride in Belgium

British Cycling has confirmed that five British women riders, Hannah Mayho, Lucy Martin, Katie Colclough, Emma Trott and Sarah Reynolds were injured today when they were struck by a car while on a training ride in Belgium.

According to a statement released by the organisation the five were in collision with a car at about 10.30 this morning on a ride between Brakel and Oudenaarde. All five have since received medical treatment at a hospital in Oudenaarde.

19 year-old pursuit rider Hannah Mayho is the most seriously injured of the five; both her legs and her right arm were broken when she was hit by the car. British Cycling say that she is undergoing surgery today. Mayho who started cycling in 2006 after being spotted when a British Cycling talent team came to her school has a string of national track, circuit and road titles to her name at junior level. In 2008 she was also the European junior individual pursuit champion and a member of the successful GB junior pursuit team also. 

Katie Colclough has suffered concussion and will be kept in hospital overnight. Lucy Martin has cracked a vertebra and has been advised to rest over the coming weeks. Emma Trott has suffered a broken collarbone and a black eye. Sarah Reynolds has hurt her hand and split her chin.

Three of the riders are from British Cycling's Olympic Academy. All of the riders' families have been informed and British Cycling say they will be making every effort to get them back to the UK as soon as possible.
