Which is the best song about cycling? Help decide the road.cc People's Choice

Tell us your favourite tune about bikes or riding

What's the best song about bikes or cycling? Tell us in this week's People's Choice poll.

Sex and drugs and rock ’n’ roll — and cycling? Ever since Daisy Bell (Bicycle Built for Two) popular songwriters from Pink Floyd to Lily Allen have featured bikes and cycling in their songs. Some have been irredeemably naff, some are considered classics. What’s your favourite cycling tune?

Here's your chance to tell us.

Here's how it works:

  • Post a comment to nominate a song. Check it hasn't already been nominated. Add a link to the song wherever you can – from YouTube, say.
  • Like a comment to vote for that song.
  • One comment per song. Any multiple comments will be deleted and their likes will not count towards a song's score. The first nomination will be the one that is counted.
  • One song per comment. Otherwise the voting doesn't make any sense.
  • Maximum 30 nominations per award. Once we hit 30 nominations we will close the nomination process.
  • All votes will be counted up until the closing date. Votes after this may appear but will not be counted.
  • We reserve the right to remove any comment at our sole discretion.
  • Closing date is 10am, Wednesday, June 29.

Over to you!

John has been writing about bikes and cycling for over 30 years since discovering that people were mug enough to pay him for it rather than expecting him to do an honest day's work.

He was heavily involved in the mountain bike boom of the late 1980s as a racer, team manager and race promoter, and that led to writing for Mountain Biking UK magazine shortly after its inception. He got the gig by phoning up the editor and telling him the magazine was rubbish and he could do better. Rather than telling him to get lost, MBUK editor Tym Manley called John’s bluff and the rest is history.

Since then he has worked on MTB Pro magazine and was editor of Maximum Mountain Bike and Australian Mountain Bike magazines, before switching to the web in 2000 to work for CyclingNews.com. Along with road.cc founder Tony Farrelly, John was on the launch team for BikeRadar.com and subsequently became editor in chief of Future Publishing’s group of cycling magazines and websites, including Cycling Plus, MBUK, What Mountain Bike and Procycling.

John has also written for Cyclist magazine, edited the BikeMagic website and was founding editor of TotalWomensCycling.com before handing over to someone far more representative of the site's main audience.

He joined road.cc in 2013. He lives in Cambridge where the lack of hills is more than made up for by the headwinds.

For my mountain bike The Acoustic Motorbike by Luka Bloom and I guess for the road it has to be Tour de France by Kraftwerk, they just have the right speeds and one day I will ride as well as they sound, maybe....

We know Queens 'Bicycle race' will win, but "How could I forget to mention the bicycle is a good invention", Red Hot Chilli Peppers 'Bicycle song' should be up there. (As should Madness 'Riding on my Bike' just as it's a perfect counter to 'I love driving in my car'.)

It's Queen, of course. Not because it's about a race. But because it's about what i want to do. And I do want to ride my bike.

Bullet the Blue Sky by U2.

The first verse has to be about riding hard in winter, right?

"In the howlin' wind
Comes a stingin' rain
See it drivin' nails
Into the souls on the tree of pain."

I had voted for Queen but I forgot this one (Performance - McSpandx).  I have to change my vote.  It's this one by far.

The cool answer is Tour de France by Kraftwerk.

The correct answer is Bicycle Race by Queen.

B-I-C-Y-C-L-E by The Kerplunks - totally naff but great.  'It's a Long Way to the Top (if you wanna Rock n Roll' is good to use on a cycling movie, but it doesn't mention bikes; hummed that all the way up Ventoux.

Rockin' Bicycle by Fats Domino from 1961. Short, sweet, energetic enough to hum in your head while riding, with lyrics that actually advocate cycling rather than just mentioning the word "bicycle".
