Wiggins and Cavendish win Six Days of Ghent (+ video)

British pair took a lap in final Madison race - also, watch Cav dancing to YMCA

Mark Cavendish and Sir Bradley Wiggins have won the Six Days of Ghent in what may well be the latter’s last ever competition.

The British pair went into this afternoon’s final day trailing both Kenny De Ketele & Moreno De Pauw and Elia Viviani & Iljo Keisse on points.

However, Cavendish and Wiggins had gained a lap on the two rival teams, putting them in first place.

But that advantage had gone by the time they lined up for the final event of the competition this afternoon, the Madison, pushing Cavendish and Wiggins into third place.

They needed to gain a lap to win – and that’s exactly what the pair, who won the world championship in the event in London in March, managed to do in the closing stages of the race.

Wiggins, who was born in Ghent, said afterwards it was likely to be the last time he rode alongside Cavendish, although he declined to say whether he had in fact completed his final race.

Yesterday, Cavendish had got well and truly  into the spirit of the event, joining in with the crowd as he danced to the Village People classic, YMCA.

The Manxman, who was in the track centre having a break from racing seemed to be having a whale of a time at the Belgian city’s ‘t Kuipke velodrome.

Congratulations to Cavendish/Wiggins. Fitting end to a rather successful career.
