White Industries quick release pedal system + vid

Insert systems means it'll work with any pedal

Something nice, shiny and new from White Industries: quick release pedals. And crucially this isn't a new axle standard or anything, just a clever way to quickly swap your existing pedals. 'I bought myself a travel bike and I had trouble taking the pedals off so I decided to do something about it', Doug White told us, and this new crank is the result.

The system consists of a crank that houses a brass insert. You screw your pedal into the insert and it slides into place, held firm by a clasp at the rear. to release the pedal you just press the brass button and slide the clasp up, and then you can pull the insert out. With a separate set of inserts for each set of pedals, switching from flats for the city to cleats for a long ride should take just seconds.

Should? Well, White Industries haven't quite got to the point where you can buy the system yet, although Doug is confident that by Interbike they'll be taking orders. There's still a bit more testing to be done, specifically in British conditions: wet, muddy, gritty, you know them well. 'Let's see if the pedals pop in and out so easily then', Doug said.

Let me at it - I break cranks and was warned off the air-line connector MKS ones because I'd bell out the cages.

Looks quite weak for a serious rider (116" fixed)

I can see that creaking after a good ride in the rain.

Looks nice. Shame that you'll have to buy a lovely, shiny new crankset to use it!
