Two cyclists seriously injured in London yesterday morning

One fights for life after being hit by lorry in Vauxhall, other suffers leg injuries in bus incident on Aldwych

One London cyclist is reported to be fighting for his life in hospital after being dragged under a lorry in Vauxhall yesterday morning, while another was left with what were described as “life-changing” injuries to his legs following an incident on Aldwych little more than an hour later.

The first incident happened close to Vauxhall Underground Station at 7.45am, reports the London Evening Standard, which added that according to police, the cyclist’s condition, initially critical, had stabilised.

Subsequent posts on the London Fixed-gear and Single-speed (LFGSS) forum confirmed that the cyclist involved was a courier.

The second incident, in which a rider ended up beneath a bus – his crushed bike can be seen in a photo accompanying the Standard’s report – took place at around 9am, and the aftermath was witnessed by a member of the LFGSS forum, who posted an account of what she had seen.

The location, on Aldwych immediately before the junction with Drury Lane, is seen as a hazardous one for cyclists as vehicles switch lane and particularly due to the large volume of bus traffic there, as they approach from the Waterloo Bridge and Strand direction and veer in towards a series of bus stops before swinging back out to head towards Fleet Street.
