Rapha and one-off Oakley fans will be able to bid for one of 10 pairs of Oakley Jawbone glasses specially made for the US-based Rapha-Focus cyclocross team and which are to be auctioned starting Monday October 10th, that's tomorrow/today depending on when you're reading this.
Those hoping to snag themselves a cheap pair of Oakley on a low bid will be disappointed though Rapha are trying to raise some money here so the minimum bid is $250 (£160) - actually that's par for the course for a pair of Jawbones and pretty good for a a one-off custom set… but they probably aren't going to sell for the minimim bid are they?
There will be daily auctions for two pairs of the special Rapha-Focus Oakley Jawbones per day, via a private email bid. According to Rapha, all the money raised by the auction will go directly to support the Rapha-Focus professional cylocross team we can imagine those boys have a pretty serious laundry bill for starters. The custom-made glasses are decorated in Rapha-Focus livery, each with a carry-bag, three sets of interchangeable lenses and with the Rapha logo etched into the primary lense set.
Rapha probably can't open the office curtains without causing controversy… so US cyclocross team supporting auctions were always bound to cause comment. However, they are totally up-front about where the money is going and presumably they think an auction is the best way of raising the maximum amount to help support their boys rather than simply selling the glasses at a fixed price.
If you do bid and win here's who you will be helping: the Rapha-Focus team has just started its second season and is comprised of riders Jeremy Powers, Chris Jones, Zach McDonald (U23) and Julie Krasniak. Committed through to the 2013 World Championships, the team sponsors are Rapha Racing, Focus Bikes, Easton Cycling, Giro, SRAM, Fizik, CrankBrothers, Lemond Fitness, Feedback Sports and Contour.
