Driver charged in connection with death of Edinburgh cyclist Audrey Fyfe

75-year-old died in August after being struck by Vauxhall Vectra

Lothian & Borders Police have confirmed that a 47-year-old man has been charged in connection with the death last August of Edinburgh cyclist Audrey Fyfe.

Although police did not diclose the actual charge brought against him, BBC News reports that the motorist was charged with causing death by driving without due care and attention.

Mrs Fyfe, aged 75, sustained serious head injuries when she was truck by a Vauxhall Vectra car on the morning of Tuesday 9 August this year in Portobello Road, Restalrig.

Police confirmed at the time that the driver had stopped at the scene and been questioned at the time.

Two days after the incident, Mrs Fyfe, who had been kept on a life support machine to give her family an opportunity to say their goodbyes, passed away in hospital.

Many of the mourners at her funeral at St Philip’s Church in Joppa wore the jerseys of CTC Lothians, which she had been a member of for more than 50 years.

Following Mrs Fyfe's death, Sally Johnson, Director of Organ Donation for NHS Blood & Transplant, wrote to road.cc to highlight the example Mrs Fyfe provided to others through her wish that in the event of her death, her organs be used to help others.

Driving without due care and attention is not a major charge. The person will be banned and fined but I expect will not face a prison sentence and will possibly be dricing again within 12 months.
