British Cycling’s Executive Director Peter King has been made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE), and fellow British Cycling member and former National Manager of the Paralympic Team Tony Yorke received an OBE.
Their award come hot on the heels of last week's Investiture Ceremony which saw seven members of British Cycling receive the honours they were awarded in the New Year's Honours List, including a knighthood for Sir Chris Hoy and a CBE for Performance Director Dave Brailsford.
Peter King was British Cycling CEO for 12 years, when he took over membership was dwindling and the organisation was in crisis – today it is one of the most successful sports governing bodies in the UK and membership is at an all time high. King's acheivments are all the more remarkable given that five years ago he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer – he fought back to good health and last month rode from Lands End to John O'Groats to raise money for a prostate charity.
Tony Yorke held many successful posts with British Cycling since 1979 and helped bring Paralympic Cycling governance into the UCI.
Speaking after his award was announced, Peter King said: “It is a humbling experience to find myself following in the footsteps of so many great athletes, coaches, administrators and volunteers who have been honoured similarly in previous years. It was my privilege to lead British Cycling for 12 years and work with the hundreds of volunteers across the country who make our sport happen every day of every week and create opportunities for our athletes to rise to stardom.
At British Cycling I was fortunate to build a terrific team of loyal, dedicated and professional staff. I had constant support of successive committed and knowledgeable Board members, led by the hardest working President in British sport. I was also able to call on the energy and enthusiasm of thousands of volunteer officials and club coaches all over the country, all of whom have contributed to the re-incarnation of the sport of cycling in the UK. To all of these wonderful people I dedicate this honour. “
Both men will collect their Honours at a later date.
