A road.cc reader says “I’d have been hit if I hadn’t swerved” when a BMW driver made a close pass on him after exiting a section of roadworks – with the driver then, for good measure, trying to overtake another car and bus up ahead only to have to abort the manoeuvre due to a vehicle approaching from the other direction.
The incident happened in the village of Hursley, Hampshire, with Tom, the reader who shot the footage, telling us: “I had a bus and two cars overtake me despite oncoming traffic.
“The overtake by the BMW was particularly bad, I probably would have been hit if I hadn't swerved to the left.
“As an added bonus, the BMW then tried to overtake the bus on a blind bend, almost causing a head-on collision.
“I can't imagine where the driver needed to be in such a hurry.
“I reported this to Hampshire Police via the ‘Report a road traffic incident’ page on their website,” he added.
“I haven't heard anything back so I don't know if they've taken any action against any of the drivers.”
> Near Miss of the Day turns 100 - Why do we do the feature and what have we learnt from it?
Over the years road.cc has reported on literally hundreds of close passes and near misses involving badly driven vehicles from every corner of the country – so many, in fact, that we’ve decided to turn the phenomenon into a regular feature on the site. One day hopefully we will run out of close passes and near misses to report on, but until that happy day arrives, Near Miss of the Day will keep rolling on.
If you’ve caught on camera a close encounter of the uncomfortable kind with another road user that you’d like to share with the wider cycling community please send it to us at info [at] road.cc or send us a message via the road.cc Facebook page.
If the video is on YouTube, please send us a link, if not we can add any footage you supply to our YouTube channel as an unlisted video (so it won't show up on searches).
Please also let us know whether you contacted the police and if so what their reaction was, as well as the reaction of the vehicle operator if it was a bus, lorry or van with company markings etc.

The pick up truck driver showed how it should be done. The BMW driver lived up to the stereotype.
[mis-posted]
I'm just sorry for all the BMW drivers who post here being as the many gives cause to rage at the the rest.
For anyone thinking was the bus coming to a stop so is that the reason he decided to overtake on a blind bend in a 30 zone, no, there is no bus stop there.
By the way, typical Road.cc geography test as it is Durley in Hampshire and not Hursley.
Another case of the vast majority making a small minority look bad!
Utter twattery by the BMW. Shame on Hants rozzers.
It's completely standard for there to be no updates from Hampshire Police - although this doesn't necessarily mean that they have taken no action.
I reported 100 incidents in 2021 - I got no acknowledgement on any of them but months later found out two of them were in court when I was sent notification of the court case results and a further two I know got points and a fine as the clips were used on the HantsSnap promotional vids.
So I know that action is taken on some of the reports.
I was talking to one of the collision assessment team a few weeks ago and I mentioned the lack of feedback as a bit of a disincentive to reprots and they hinted that changes might be coming to address that. I won't hold my breath - but I will just keep reporting (I'm up to 47 this year already to Hants - and that was with a month off the road recovering from a driver who went into the side of me on a roundabout - getting themselves a Driving Without Due Care and Attention charge.)
