here’s a handy cut out and keep article, for next time you encounter the issue in the title of this thread.

So, on a Friday morning on the Salisbury to Ringwood road, on the Hampshire / Wiltshire border, 114 vehicles were stopped, the vehicle, any cargo and the drivers inspected. 

Of the 114, five as the article headline says, were dodge enough to be seized there and then; a further three were cited for not having an MOT.  I don’t know what the 24 referrals to the EA were about - sounds like they should have taken part in this operation.

it’s nice that Timmy the Tortoise was micro-chipped (how do you that, with a Black & Decker?)

 I Make that 7% noncompliant in a material way in this sample. Put your own house in order, Mr Motorist.

By comparison Hampshire sounds quite good.

So all 65 had no 'road tax' (did any of them try arguing that 'actually, the road tax was abolished in 1937' and if so, was the response from plod 'I googled it and according to this cycling site, you're right - on your way then')

I'm suspicious that since they got rid of physical discs VED has pretty-much become optional.   Are there any figures for how many dodgers get caught now vs then?

 

Edit  - I don't know how to interpret this, does it mean they are catching more or that there are now more evaders to be caught?

Isn't the problem that it used to be that someone could just wander along a street looking at the disc in the windscreen whereas now everything has to be checked against an online database or via ANPR?

So, IMO, dropping the physical disc (I wonder how much money that actually saved?) has opened the door to VED avoidance.  Why wouldn't it?  We had enough of a problem when there was a physical disc displayed to prove your compliance with the law, but now...??

Referrals to the EA will probably be for carrying waste without the asppropriate paperwork......

Little 10 year olds Johnny and Jenny who get their bikes for xmas won't be able to insure

them. As under 18s they won't be able to a legal agreement/obligation to take out insurance.

Happy to be corrected.

I think if you're under 18 you can sign a legal contract, but it may be more difficult (impossible?) for the other party to enforce the contract. For insurance I don't think it would be a problem, so long as you pay up front. Anyway, 16 year-old moped riders must have insurance so clearly there's some way round it.
