Early Start

Why the early start for Het Nieuwsblad and the other early spring classics ?

I see there was an email which arrived by my time (in Abu Dhabi) at 9.08pm last night, which was just about when I was brushing my teeth and going to bed so I could get up at 5.30 to go cycling.

I came back from my ride, had a shower, breakfast, popped out to the store and settled down to do my Fantasy Team in plenty of time before the race only to find it had shut.

That's just not sufficient warning. I imagine I'm not the only person caught out.

In any case, why are the entry deadlines not consistent please ? And why were not given more notice ? (Don't say it was in the stage guide).

Race cancelled. Conditions too dangerous due to snow/threat of ice.

I'll say this... You had unlimited transfers before that competition began, next time, why don't you set up a team when the competition is open and then if you forget to tweak it or don't wake up on time, at least you're in!

On the other hand, I know it goes contrary to the practices of how this game has traditionally been run, but I'm still an advocate of something we discussed last year:

... Could we have transfers charged at the start of a race? Meaning I could make all the changes I want to make to my squad, save them in the game, but only be charged when the race proper starts? I could get messages saying, "These transfers will take effect at the start of the next stage. You have made 4 transfers from your last team" or something like that...

... I know this would take a lot of programming... but... [this] solution would offer those of us who don't want to wait to the last minute to enter our teams a chance to play with a little less pressure.

Which, back then, had drheaton's support...

I like the idea of transfers being stored up and processed on the deadline eliminating any possible advantage people might get from not having anything better to do at 10am on a weekday morning 19 ... 4

And, of course, after this we all became advocates of the famous reset button! 1

By the way I don't have anything to do with running the game but thought it might be helpful for those who haven't found it to point out where the information is most easily accessable.

I can't really believe all the above tooing and throwing. 20

The game website has all the information on it. Click on the "stages" tab above your team and it tells you what stages are coming up an when the transfer deadline is. It also tells you this in the "whats coming up" tab of the dashboard. I don't see the need for emails (helpful though they are) when all the information is there on your game home screen with one click 26

it's both. generally we try to set up the races so the transfer deadline coincides with the start of the race. but last year there was a few stages where we got it wrong and people could make transfers when the stage was running, which is a lot more of a problem than having the door shut a few hours before the race starts.

deadlines do move around, because race starts do. as he's said above, gkam is doing the admin for the early classics and he set the deadlines which are a bit more conservative than they might have been. having said that they're not hidden, and an email went out that stated specifically what they were.

you can now follow @roadcc_fantasy on twitter too which'll warn you automatically of upcoming deadlines.

Jesus, what a whiner.... We're all sorry, will you take our apologies?... Man! What do you want? A personal apology? It's just a game! What do you want? An apology, a refund, somebody to complain about, a hug?.... It sure wasn't deliberate, why don't you call someone or email them so we don't have to hear you being rude to people here, who for the most part are friendly?....

Another helpful comment from someone who can't answer the question.

Tour stages sometimes start early too but the deadlines are open until they begin. It's not consistent i.e. it changes.

Anyone who isn't running the game, please don't answer...

I AM running the game, I AM in charge of the early classic's 4

There is no change, they are early because they start early.

Yes some of the tour stages start early and we'll see what time the dead line is this year. Last year it changed all the time, so its no different this year, but its been set early so it cuts off before any stage starts and we won't have anything like happened a couple of times last season. Where you could still make transfers after the stage has begun.

Anything else? I also ran the Tour down under, Qatar and Oman......

OK, I thought Dave and Tony were in charge - didn't realise there'd been a change of management.

In which case, since you ask... it still doesn't explain why the deadline should be four hours before the start of a race ?

It means that anyone who is ahead on time zones has to put in their picks before the close of the previous day, before previews or late changes to teams. No European race starts at 7am.

And from the sounds of it there may be further changes to deadlines in other stages. You say "there is no change" and then in the next paragraph you say "it changed all the time so its no different this year". Which is it ?

The difference for me, and I suspect many others, is that last year I entered a game which had been running for a while and was just a free bit of fun run by the guys who do the website.

This year I have paid to enter a premium competition and I don't think it is unreasonable to expect it to be run consistently and fairly.

No rule changes, but because they are LONG one day races, they tend to start early, today it started at 10am their time, 9am here in the UK, so need to put a deadline a bit earlier 26

Gee thanks Barry.

As I specifically stated, I did get an email last night, after I'd gone to bed because I'm in a different time zone. I'm guessing you didn't work that out.

I didn't sign up to and pay for a competition where I have to check my emails on a daily basis just to see whether the rules have randomly changed this weekend.

I got an email saying the competition had opened five days ago, i checked the deadlines then. i also got another email 24 hours ago which specifically stated that the deadline was 6am, and to make changes the night before. so i did.

i'm guessing you didn't get either of them then?
