Paying no road tax

so I have just bought a new car with low emissions and so pay no tax on it.
How do the 'you don't pay any tax on your bike' people deal with that argument now?
Not that any of them read road.cc but just wondered. or will they push me off the road in the car as well as the bike?

Personally I just smile and give them a thumbs up. The majority of road users are not aware how roads are paid for and so naturally assume it's their " road tax". The myth is enforced by advertisers telling them their new car will not have road tax for the 1 st 3 years etc. it's used in most walks of life and, in my opinion, will never change. I do get comments when out in my ipayroadtax.com cycling jersey though. I tend to direct any sensible people to the website for more info.

if some of those taxes were used to clear the cycle path of glass, overgrown trees, potholes and parked cars, then I for one would love to use it. i don't enjoy being pushed into the gutter

If someone was to say to me "You don't pay Road Tax" I'd reply with "Neither do you".

If there is time to say more then you can explain that their car is taxed on its emissions, that Road Tax was abolished by Winston Churchill in 1936 and road maintenance is paid out of general taxation, just like schools hospitals, power stations etc etc.

But to be honest, the kind of people who are gobby and ignorant enough to mouth off at you are probably not going to listen to you. They're just venting frustration at their inadequate lives. Just like the arrogant tossers who tell cyclists to get off the road and use the cycle/shared use path when it's none of their friggin' business, and cyclists are free to choose either option.

i know that, but it doesn't seem to affect their whining, but adding a car into the equation must really confuse them.
the fact they argue with mark cavendish who probably contributes a little more to tax, directly and indirectly, than most people will in a lifetime doesn't seem to stop them.

Er... no-one pays road tax, because there's no such thing. Long extinct, last seen in the wild in 1936.

haha yes you probably won't get to many on that side of the argument reading road.cc!

This works better down the pub than it does waiting at the traffic lights, but

"there is no such thing as road tax, and hasn't been since 1937. Road building and maintenance is financed from other taxation; that fee you pay for the little paper disc which sits on the windscreen is vehicle excise duty (VED), a charge which varies according to the emissions produced."
