Thanks for all the replies so far. I think the closest I have found that should work for me is Workout Sync from Training Peaks to my Garmin watch.
However can't get the TP calendar to appear in my Garmin Calendar on the Connect app. Not sure whether it's a software issue or whether my watch - a lowish end vivioactive3 - is the issue.
Needs more fiddlin'
You can make up your own workouts and send to a Garmin, or as said by others, TrainerRoad can be set to be used on outdoor rides via a Garmin, you could probably to this via the iphone app, I've not checked.
TrainerRoad sessions are brilliant. How practical it would be however to do a typical intense interval session on the road however, I don't know. Potentially dangerous looking down at the screen waiting for the next instruction.
Trainerroad works with Garmin workouts from memory and the plans can be adapted for outside riding automatically
You can do this with training peaks and a wahoo elemnt.
I purchased a custom plan from sufferfest which which was delivered to training peaks and on days with outdoor option I just turn on elemnt and workout is ready to go.
I have the basic version of training peaks, not sure if you need the premium version to create/upload your own workouts though?
Can't you use Trainerroad on your phone outside?
Whilst its okay in theory and depending on where you live the terrain and road conditions are often not going to let you follow such a workout accurately anyway unless you have 30 miles of flat road with no traffic lights or downhill sections.
I find it easier outdoors to have a simple workout like, 2 hours at tempo, or if you have a long hill, 3 x 20 mins at threshold on hill repeats, or do a long ride with VO2 max hills. Or 3 x 20 sweetspot. Or 6 AC intervals followed by 20 mins Tempo.
A really complex workout is probably best done on the trainer.
