Essex police appealing for witnesses after fatal hit and run that saw cyclist knocked into oncoming traffic

Motorist has been arrested and released under investigation

An inquest has heard that an Essex cyclist lost his life after being hit by two vehicles on September 16. A 71-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a road traffic collision and has since been released by police under investigation.

Gazette News reports that Declan Shea was cycling on Harwich Road in Elmstead, towards the B1029 in Great Bromley, just after 8pm, when he was hit from behind. He was then hit by another vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.

Police and paramedics attended, but he sadly died at the scene.

A full inquest is due to take place at a later date and police are appealing for witnesses. Anyone with information can contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 01245 240590 or email collisionappeal [at] essex.pnn.police.uk

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.

It is so obvious that there is no way the cyclist could have been seen on that straight bit of highway with no surrounding tree, infastructure or any other distractions. Ridiculous!

1 year on...

I cannot work out from the abject reporting which vehicle hit Declan Shea from behind, I'm guessing it was Smith [who] "has been exonerated of any blame in relation to causing Mr Shea’s death because it has been proven it would have been impossible for him to have seen Mr Shea. "

https://www.gazette-news.co.uk/news/16955255.terence-smith-could-do-noth...

"Smith was handed a month in jail suspended for six months."

As predicted by Grahamd.

“This gentleman was riding a pedal cycle towards the B1029 when he was struck by a vehicle from behind"

What, not 'mown down'? Where is the hate, the shock & horror from the rest of the broadsheets, what about Richard Madeley, has he not spoken out and attacked the AA or the RAC,, why is he not asking questions and losing his shit over this? Why are the media not reporting this disgusting execution and act of cowardice!

The dead gentleman was firstly male and then he wasn't blonde haired, blue eyed, slim, middle class and a mother of two.

Plus it is well-known that loads of older drivers are a menace on the road regardless of how you choose to travel, but we have to wait until they have dangerous accidents before we can get their licences of them.

A very rare carbon composite aero designed Villiger Eagle that I used to own, made in Switzerland IIRC but were  rebadged under license and better known as the Vitus ZX-1, think Peugeot rebadged a few of them too. It was too small for me, sold it to a guy in italy who offered me an obscene amount of money for it, then again where you gonna find another, I haven't ever seen one since.

'writes' Ramuz,  you should know as cyclists we don't have any rights.

I wonder whether the minister will now be writing to the AA, the RAC, etc, asking them to remind their members about the rules of the road as set out in the Highway Code??

You just know that this is likely to result in a suspended sentence with the driver surrendering his licence  wholly inadequate. In a world where equality is quite rightly everywhere so should sentencing be.

You're absolutely right: it's much better to sing la-la-la with your fingers in your ears... 3

Need some stats to substantiate that accusation.

But you know that is the likely outcome.
