Somehow we missed this eye-catching story in the Bristol Post last month. Roger Boyd recently cycled 19,000 miles around the world – while stoned. “There are no limits to my daily amounts – of weed or distance,” he observed.
The Bristolian describes himself as "some kind of bike-riding stoner evangelist on a mission to challenge outdated ideas about cannabis."
Writing on healthy-stoner.com, he says his efforts are an attempt to make a contribution to the international campaign to normalise cannabis use.
Boyd (a pseudonym) starts his day by riding 20 miles, then he stops to vape some weed, and then he carries on riding with a few more stops throughout the day. “It’s great to break up the bike ride and makes the next 20 miles go quickly,” he said.
Between August 2015 and September 2017, Boyd covered 19,000 miles across Europe, India, Nepal, Australia and New Zealand.
“I’ve always loved getting out on my bike and doing exercise while stoned,” he said.
“The idea for my cycling around the world adventure came to me one night, but there wasn’t much on the Internet about vaping and exercise.
“There is a negative perception about people who use cannabis compared to those who use alcohol but alcohol is more harmful – there’s an imbalance there.
“I'm perfectly lucid and safe when I ride – it just helps me eat up the miles."
He also wants to help convert people from smoking to vaping.
“After over a decade of smoking I could feel my lungs weren’t very healthy and I thought enough is enough. I stopped smoking and within three months I felt such a difference.”
He added: “Believe it or not I am trying to be an anti-smoking campaigner because I know how much of a difference quitting smoking made to my health.”
Boyd worked and saved for nine years for his last trip and now wants to take 18-20 months to do a Pan-American high-way tour from South to North America and then across Canada.
“Last time it was all self-funded. It’d be good to have some kind of sponsorship next time.”

I noticed an advert the other day for a vaping starter kit. Can you imagine if they sold drinking starter kits or starter cigarettes?
Do you mean things like alco-pops or those cigarette sweets that they used to sell?
I remember eating sweet cigarettes when I were a lad: I’ve never smoked, though...
No morality equations here; smoking anything is bad for you. Weed might be less unsafe than drink driving (for others,) but inhaling anything is just bad for your lungs. Vaping might well be less dangerous than smoking, but inhaling window cleaner is probabaly bad for you. We might be waiting a while before the vaping backlash starts, but it will. Just another industry built on peoples addictions and willful ignorance. Just don't; you'll live longer, and your skin will thank you.
That is not the kind of vaping these people talk about, mate.
I like to drive stoned. Really eats up the miles.
Jersey pockets full of Mars bars rather than gels, I should think.
Cannabis may be better than tobacco, but that's like saying Vlad the Impaler is better than Genghis Khan.
It's still illegal, immoral and dumb to cycle, drive, operate heavy machinery and so on while under the influence.
For the record, I'm in favour of legalising it, but not while driving etc.
I agree on the imbalance between society's attitude to alcohol and marijuana, but I will take some convincing that riding while stoned is safe. A friend once tried to drive me home after doing some marijuana (unknown to me) and after less than a mile I insisted on taking over, his reactions and attention were all over the place.
Good man with some common sense. I grew up around cannabis and am a regular "vape-er" (ex smoker). Now nearly 50 and it never turned me into a thieving smackhead.
I was also classed as an alchoholic in my younger days and certainly had far more trouble in my life then than the years since. Alcohol is great fun but can cause you all sorts of problems, cannabis is lovely and if you get on with it seems to cause no problems at all. It also makes a bike ride very pleasant.
I've surfed/mtb/road ridden stoned for most of my adult life, (I'm 60) I've even raced national level enduro after having a vape, helps me focus and enhances my experience, I'm not unique, those of us who do it can't really be public about it due to the dogma and negative perception, glad someone has come out of the closet!
Quite easy to spot though, especially if packing enough for a three year adventure.

Amen, brother, amen!
The hypocrisy regardling alcohol is so glaring that it will eventually be its undoing - at least as far as being accepted in society more than marijuana. Alcohol has, and will harm, far more people than pot ever has or will.
