Follow Dave's 126 mile Highclere ride live today

Dave gets Champion Chipped up for the preview ride for this summer's Highclere Sportive...

The road.cc office is a man down today as Big Dave has gone out for a ride, the Highclere Castle Magnificat Invitation ride to be exact all 126 miles of it – all the riders are fitted with Champion Chip trackers so you can follow his progress throughout the day just by clicking here. Dave's not the only road.cc rider there either, Jon Burrage one of our contributors, and a forum stalwart is also stretching his legs.

The route is 126 miles with 1700m of climbing, Dave's never ridden that far before so we're sure he'll enjoy it. The trackers went at 9am when they leave from Highclere Castle and update the rider's progress every four seconds all going well they should be stopping for teach and cake at Spearholt at 11:30, 42 miles in. Then they head off to the South Downs, stopping at Owens Cycles (84 miles) at 14:15 then it's off again, climbing Stoner Hill and heading back to Highclere for 5pm. Sounds like a nice Spring leg stretcher and you can follow it all from the comfort of your computer.

Average speed for the ride is expected to be 18mph but last time we looked they were cracking along at over 20mph - mind you, they'd only done a couple of miles.

It's not all play though, Dave and Jon will both be evaluating some new wheels from Mavic on their day out.

Yes, apparently they are this year's event will be the first UK sportive to use the Champion Chip tracker system.

just replayed the race on the map site - that's a really clever system. it'd be brilliant to have that on a major race. but also it'd be ace for letting your better half see how you were getting on during a sportive - is it something they're going to offer on the actual ride?

It was indeed. We did pay the price for chasing the bunch from the start. Got dropped on a sharp climb after 25ish km and had to chase down the pack for 15km. When I got back in contact it was fine until I dropped my chain on the crest of another climb.
Good day though and those Mavic carbone sl'... 1

I'm feeling pretty tired from just watching his little coloured dot go round the track. Im kinda glad he stopped cos I needed a break! 37

Yeah not bad considering he did 65 miles on Monday, and John did a metric century at the weekend.

I think I'd have planted the chip on the lead rider during the tea-stop...

Looks like Dave got to 85.5 miles before breakdown. Good going. That Champion Chip Tracker system is brilliant.

Just heard from Dave, the climbed off - shame they didn't leave the tracking chips live though cos their average speed would've shot up. 'Paid the price for trying to chase the fast boys at the start' was the big man's analysis.

He just sent this pic of a post-ride Jon

Very cool in a geeky kinda way. Of course it would be most use if you could see it on the bike - which leads me to wonder how long it will be before we can get a 17 inch flat screen onto a set of bars 1

What a splendid device this is! How long before they do this for the major tours?

Go Dave!

Yeah go Dave!

The other awesome thing is you can see when people take short cuts… no names, no pack drill on that one

This thing is awesome, watched some dude disappear off at a high rate of knots in the wrong direction, I think he was driving home...

Dave is doing well at the mo' sat in the group with 55 miles done...
