Sellout crowd for debut event at Glasgow's new Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome

British Cycling has revealed that tickets for the first event at Glasgow’s new Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, the UCI Track Ccling World Cup Classics in November, sold out in record time when they went on the sale to the public yesterday. Early indication of ticket demand had already led to the velodrome moving to it's full seating capacity o 4500 - something which was not due to happen until the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The new velodrome, built for the Commonwealth Games, will host the second round of this season’s World Cup. An initial tranche of tickets went on sale to British Cycling members last week, and the remainder sold out in just 25 minutes yesterday.

Councillor Archie Graham, Chair of Glasgow Life and the Executive Member for the Commonwealth Games, commented: "We always expected demand for tickets to be high for the Track Cycling World Cup but to sell out all but one session in just under an hour is a fantastic result and shows just why we are one of the world's leading destinations for sporting events.

“We now can't wait for the action to get underway and for the world's best cyclists to take to the track at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome for the first time."

Jonny Clay, Director of Cycle Sport and Membership at British Cycling added: "With the profile of British Cycling on an all time high after the Olympics in London we were always confident that we'd fill the venue in Glasgow for the first international track cycling event in the UK after the Games.

“However, the response this morning exceeded our own expectations and it's clear that the sport will get a huge welcome in Glasgow later this year.

“We hope to reward their enthusiasm for the sport with a great event to celebrate the new venue in Glasgow, for those who've missed out, we'll have coverage on the BBC to ensure that the widest possible audience see the venue in action."

Hoy himself will not be competing in the event that will see the first competitive action at the velodrome that bears his name, but the six-time Olympic champion has said he will be there as a spectator.

British Cycling has said that “a handful” of tickets may be released closer to the event, which takes place between 16 and 18 November, with details of any sales being made through the event's website as well as its Facebook page and Twitter feed. 

It adds that tickets will go on sale this Friday at 1pm via Ticketmaster for next month’s British Cycling Senior National Track Championships at Manchester Velodrome.
