Sheffield commuters are being encouraged to leave their cars at home and ride into work next week thanks to Pedal Ready. 'Fly to work' guided rides are being held on Ecclesall Road on Monday and Abbeydale Road/London Road on Tuesday.
And cycling campaigners say that two wheels provide the fastest way of cutting through rush hour traffic over five miles, and they are preparing to pass on advice about the two main commuter routes.
Max McCulloch, of Pedal Ready said: "If you've been thinking about riding to work but you've been put off because you're nervous of traffic, or you're not sure of routes, now's your chance. We can show you everything you need to arrive in style."
The rides start at from Hunters Bar (Endcliffe Park gates) on Monday and Broadfield Road green space (junction of Broadfield and Abbeydale Roads) on Tuesday, starting at 7.30am and 8.30am. They are sponsored by the council as part of European Mobility Week. Contact bike2work [at] pedalready.co.uk or phone 0114 2412775.
Organisers of the the Fly to work guided rides got the idea from the weekly Cycle Fridays in London, that are run by the London Cycling Campaign (LCC) in partnership with Transport for London to help guide hundreds of new cyclists from the suburbs into central London using safe routes. There are eight rides per week and they will provide qualified and experienced marshals to guide each ride.
Pedal Ready train children, young people and adults to cycle more safely, more often and are a team of Bikeability approved cycle instructors who deliver cycle coaching to schools, universities, companies, communities and individuals on a one-to-one or group basis throughout the South Yorkshire area.
