Dinas Powys man was driving while disqualified for 18th time

Quote:

Lee Mears sped at 80mph in a 40mph zone, drove on the wrong side of the road around a blind bend and caused a lorry to brake sharply to avoid a crash.

The pursuit lasted 25 minutes as he was chased through the Spytty, Goldcliff and Nash areas of the city on the night of Friday, December 15 last year.

Mears hit another driver causing damage to his wing mirror, Cardiff Crown Court was told.

The 35-year-old and his Citroen Boxer van were only brought to a halt after a stinger device was deployed to deflate his tyres.

So he was jailed for 16 months and banned from driving for six years.... because driving bans are so effective at stopping him from driving......

Drivers fined over new temporary speed limit changes on A20 Sidcup Road, near Swanley Interchange

She added: “There must be so many people who are stressed, who have not been able to sleep or eat over the NIPs.

“People are going to lose their jobs and homes. Most people have a clean licence and now they are at risk of losing it over this.

“However, as highlighted to you again by a local journalist this week, there is still at least one sign stating 50mph and many Satellite Navigation systems are still showing 50mph and 70mph for this section of road.

One more crossing will fix it.

The driver is not thought to have been speeding and told police she did not see Oliver in time. It was dark and raining when the accident happened. (No mention of any police action.) His mum Ruth Hoy said: “I got the call every parent dreads."

Calls for talks to stop £100 car park fines for 'crossing road to use toilet'

Many drivers have fallen foul of the new strict parking regulations which were introduced at the St Ann Way retail park last year

Councillor Pam Tracey (C, Westgate) says her inbox is being filled with emails from people who have been given a parking charge notice. She says the problems with the charge notices there and other parking woes are the talk of Gloucester.

“It’s diabolical,” she said. “It’s one email after another. There’s loads of people being hit.

“They are fining people who park there in the evenings now too. As far as I’m concerned the Peel Centre never did their homework before they introduced these rules."

I rather think they did, Cllr Tracey and it doesn't sound like they want it be told their business by you. If it's the talk of Gloucester, then presumably it's only out of towners now being hit? How many of them are writing to you?

Staffordshire motorsport show 'evacuated due to high levels of carbon monoxide'

One disgruntled attendee wrote on Motorsport With Attitude's Facebook page: "Three-and-a-half hours drive to stay the weekend for events. I don't understand why you ran the arena shows inside with so little ventilation, the extractors were not enough and need big powerful fans to push the fumes out.

Another said: "We left after 1.5 hrs. Went to the show at 11.30 and car monoxide fumes were unbearable!!"

Parisians vote in favour of tripling parking costs for SUVs

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/feb/04/parisians-vote-in-favour-o...

Quote:

The new parking tariffs could come into force at the start of September. The cost of on-street parking for an SUV or 4x4 car would rise to €18 (£15) an hour in the centre of Paris and €12 an hour in the rest of the city.

The prices will apply to vehicles weighing more than 1.6 tonnes with a combustion engine or hybrid vehicles, and more than 2 tonnes for electric vehicles. The move will not apply to Paris residents’ parking.

Council accused of 'giving up' on Bridgwater as plans to upgrade key roundabout are scaled back

The council said it was "taking a new approach" to the issue

The council subsequently announced in mid-January that it would be "taking a new approach", focussed on improved pedestrian crossings and other walking and cycling improvements rather than physically increasing the amount of space available to motorists.

Speaking from the roundabout site on Monday morning (February 5), Mr Redman said making any improvements to the capacity of the Cross Rifles roundabout was challenging due to the lack of open neighbouring land. He said: "The problem we have when it comes to our road infrastructure is the fact that we're limited by the close proximity of the houses and the businesses around us.

If roads need to be updated to accommodate absurdly large cars, taxpayers will foot the bill.

(US, but still relevant)

https://slate.com/business/2024/02/car-safety-guardrails-bloat-electric-...

Quote:

It’s a nightmare situation on a highway: Your car hits a patch of ice and starts to skid. Unable to regain control, you panic as you veer toward the roadway’s edge.

In emergencies like this, guardrails provide a failsafe. As explained in a federal memo, a guardrail will “deflect a vehicle back to the roadway [or] slow the vehicle down to a complete stop.” Your car will probably be damaged, but guardrails can prevent something much worse.

But some modern vehicles can instead smash through these guardrails, new research demonstrates, sending their passengers hurtling toward a ditch, cliff, or whatever is on the other side. The problem is that thousands of miles of guardrails installed alongside American highways were designed decades ago, when vehicles were much lighter than the behemoths that increasingly dominate the U.S. car market. And cars are only getting heavier: Bulkier electrified versions of big cars are poised to arrive in the years ahead. The risk of huge vehicles tearing through guardrails is yet another reason to expect American car bloat to augur an expensive, and dangerous, roadway future.

Welcome to self-awarenessville, Kent

Sandwich BMW drifter opens Skidz Advanced Driving School at Manston Airport

“Drifting on the road can cost up to £100 a night. You’ve got the worry of the police taking your car as well as being seen as a public nuisance. The drifter community just want somewhere safe to do it without the stress. Cars can reach five-figure sums and people don’t want to see them impounded.”

The engineer, who has a business modifying drift cars, has previously been banned from the road three times and fined a total of £7,000.

https://www.kentonline.co.uk/thanet/news/i-ve-been-a-naughty-boy-but-now...

EDIT : I'm curious as to what the £100 a night actually goes on. Tyres, fines?

More crashes on Kent roads than any other county, new figures reveal

Among those now calling for Kent’s roads to be made safer is Keena Entwhistle, whose son Ethan died in a crash in October, two days before his 19th birthday.

The 46-year-old told KentOnline: “Neither I nor Ethan did anything wrong, but I have been left with a life sentence of this pain, and I do not want anyone else to ever feel this way.

“I think all roads in towns, and especially by schools, should be 20 miles an hour.
