IMO that argument is weak.

Doctors already have a legal duty to report notifciable diseases.

Since such potential killer drivers are a hazard to public safety, I don't see much difference.

One further issue is that there is currently no serious enforcement on drivers who do *not* report certain conditions etc, as per their legal responsibility.

I guess only drivers trying to wriggle out of a fine will ever pick up the Traffic Signs Manual and only the most determined will make through to the 2006 regulations.

The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016 - extract below, which I think is Chris's 20cm Eureka! moment, if he's arguing about there being an entrance sign to a permits only locality.

While somewhat sympathetic currently I'd agree with HP.  Here I think the cases are not quite the same.  For one I don't think there are (currently...) any notifiable conditions where if you show up at the doctors they put you down.  (You can get yourself sectioned of course which is disagreeable to most.   But by that point you probably aren't thinking it all through).

I'm aware that this sometimes gets brought up as somewhere legislation *might* soften the principle of confidentiality (e.g. in the much more salient cases like plane crashes).  I don't know if this has changed (following a fairly recent review?) but guidance does seem to say a doctor *should* notify in the case of medical conditions of interest and UK firearms licence holders*.

Although the law is also very clear having a firearms licence "is a priveledge not a right" (which is very much not how we currently view driving).

In the driving case I imagine for some conditions people may a) have some idea they have a problem and b) be aware that this could affect their driving competently and safely.  I would definitely not favour anything that gets in the way of them getting their condition assessed and hopefully addressed.  I strongly suspect that there would be an impact on people's willingness to consult health services if they knew there was feedback - which on balance might lead to worse issues (for the individual and - via their driving - on everyone else).

* See fairly recent legislation and guidance for medical professionals) - in the latter it says:

Where there is a reasonable belief that an individual holding a firearms licence may represent a danger to themselves or others, doctors should ask them to give up their licence. ... If the applicant refuses, a doctor should inform the police authorities firearms licensing department as a matter of urgency." and "...If there is a public safety concern, or if the GP believes that the patient has not or will not inform the police, then the GP should contact the local police firearms branch themselves (or telephone 101) to report the new diagnosis. They should inform the patient that they (the GP) will be doing this.

£1billion for ten miles of new road

No mention of any active travel. Plenty of Save the Driver nonsense though.

Based on the numbers in the article, that's at least £20 for every time a driver saves ten minutes of the next couple of decades. And I'm being very generous (lowballing the estimate.) It's probably more like £100, so £600/hr.

Or, it costs close to £40,000 per road user. Would any of them pay that to save ten minutes off their work commute for the next 20 years?

Remind me - why can't the GP or optometrist report someone to the DVLA?

They can, the government guidance says:

Quote:

Circumstances may arise in which a person cannot or will not notify DVLA. It may be necessary for a doctor, optometrist or other healthcare professional to consider notifying DVLA under such circumstances if there is concern for road safety, which would be for both the individual and the wider public.

and the GMC backs this with the advice:

Quote:

If you become aware that a patient is continuing to drive when they may not be fit to do so, you should make every reasonable effort to persuade them to stop. If you do not manage to persuade the patient to stop driving, or you discover that they are continuing to drive against your advice, you should consider whether the patient’s refusal to stop driving leaves others exposed to a risk of death or serious harm. If you believe that it does, you should contact the DVLA or DVA promptly and disclose any relevant medical information, in confidence, to the medical adviser.

I drove through the Surrey town cut off by roadworks and now understand why everyone's furious

It is almost impossible to travel in the area during rush hour

Those who have braved driving through between Byfleet and Chertsey at the moment have found themselves crawling along in their car, with what is usually a 15 minute trip taking 45 minutes. Some have likened the town of Byfleet to being a “slow-moving car park” while others feel like a prisoner in their own home.

Another echoed: “On the occasions, I have taken the bus but have experienced cancellations due to late running of schedules. I’m retired and have cycled all my life, but now find it too dangerous due to the increased traffic. This is at a time when the government is encouraging active travel. Living in Weybridge, once a pleasant area, has become a nightmare.”

I do like a good "drivers warned...this common mistake could land you in court" - winter clothing, and in this case, overloading your car with Christmas presents - presumably bought with the £££ you save by using one of the Christmas free parking driver handouts.

Christmas present mistake could cost you £2,500 and three points

In serious cases you could even be banned from driving

https://www.devonlive.com/news/uk-world-news/christmas-present-mistake-c...

Doesnt seem very likely does it, but here's a map of where it might happen (pink) and where (red) it really won't.

Nissan drink driver caught in Wyre Road, Pershore, after tip off

The solicitor said that the defendant guessed someone at the pub must have made the report to the police and he would have preferred if they had spoke to him which would have stopped him driving. (Yeah right.)

Free parking and travel plans in Sutton Coldfield for Christmas ‘torpedoed’ angering local leaders

A proposal to provide free car parking, bus travel and bike use in Sutton Coldfield with a £35,000 town council subsidy has been rejected by Birmingham City Council

Cllr Ward continued: “This is the third year in a row that the City Council have torpedoed a scheme like this – yet again letting our Royal Town down. The reasons given are all around not wanting to be seen to promote the use of the car.

“Such dogmatic and short-sighted logic ignores both the bus and bike elements of our scheme but also the real needs of our town centre businesses today. It was a small intervention that would have made a difference.”

He said: “To me its absolute lunacy. We are trying to regenerate the town centre and trying to keep the local economy vibrant. Not everyone is going to walk to the town centre or get on their bike.

Cllr David Pears: “A lot of people have mobility issues, need a car and use the car parks. They are being disadvantaged. If you’re going a main shop for Christmas you won’t want to carry it home on a bike.

“In other areas like Tamworth you can park for free. But in Sutton motorists have to pay ridiculous car parking prices. The sooner this Labour council goes the better.”

Driver crashes into a woman's car then gives police incriminating footage

Charles Hambley, 28, collided his Mitsubishi with a woman driving a Citroen on the A4051 in Cwmbran

In mitigation, Tabitha MacFarlane described her client as having an "autistic nature". She added: "He called the police himself and volunteered his dashcam. That tells you all you need to know about him." She said the defendant lives with his grandparents and effectively acts as their carers.
