Turbo training - setting up for the RideLondon 100

Hi,

I was due to ride the RideLondon in July but, of course, it has been cancelled due to Covid19.

I still want to ride and raise money for my charity, but not sure how to fix everything up.

I have an Elite Super Crono turbo trainer which has bluetooth and Ant+ connectivity. Its set up in the shed and I ride everyday.
Other than that I have a smartphone and Strava subscription.

I want to be able to cycle and be recorded as cycling 100miles (with climbs too if poss).

SO...
... What app do I need? I really don't want to sign up to a £20 a month app which I may not make the most of.
Whatever the app it needs to record speed, distance and, preferably, power.

... What hardware, if any beyond a phone and a laptop, do I need. Happy to buy a low level cycle computer if it will help, but not really in the market for £100+ gear.

What do you think?
Let me know
Thanks
James

There is the “PRL full” course on Zwift, involves doing 11 laps of the London course that makes up 100 miles. You could sign up for the 7 day free trial and do it during that week. Just makes sure that the London course is scheduled to be available during that time.

If you're looking to create the actual RL route, bear in mind that RGT will currently only allow you to ride a route that you've created if you can get at least 4 other people to ride it at the same time.

Rouvy or Bkool will allow you to upload the route and ride it. In theory, Bkool will generate a 3D landscape for you to cycle through while you do it, but it's really finicky about what routes it will accept for this, so you'll likely be stuck watching yourself move across a map. Rouvy gives you more of a Google Earth view. Rouvy are currently running a free beta of the new version of their software; Bkool will give you a free limited time trial.

The RL organisers have hinted that they're looking at organising some sort of virtual challenge, so there may be an official option on the way on one of the platforms that will give you more of a 3D or video experience of the actual route - keep an eye on their news updates.

Why not just ride the 100 miles outside ? Maybe laps of your local area if you're concerned about this.

100m on a turbo is going to be horrible. And you'll have numb bits for weeks.

I've been fairly happy doing 2 hours on a turbo in lockdown - but you'd be looking at 5 or 6 ?

Failing that get a cheapo bike computer that counts your revs. Then set the resistance as lightly as possible and you might do it in a few hours.

Try  RGT Cycling for free.  In fact, they are still giving premium features for free to benefit athletes during CIOVID-19.  https://www.rgtcycling.com/

Here's a decent write up.  https://pezcyclingnews.com/technspec/rgt-cycling-a-free-alternative-to-z...

You can link RGT to Strava and even auto-upload activities to Stava.  What's not to like?

I dropped Zwift this spring after it warmed up.  Next winter I will probably go back, but to RGT.  I think we should support those who are supporting us.

Honestly, I'd try out Zwift. £12.99 per month but no lock in, so you could use it for one month for the Ride London and then stop. You can virtually ride laps of a portion of the Ride London course and on the day I can guarantee that there will be many others doing the same which is great for morale (you can chat etc.). It will run low resolution on most laptops, better resolution on modern phones and tablets and works very well on Apple TV. Lots of info here: https://zwiftinsider.com/
