The latest episode of the road.cc Podcast sees us discuss the implications of the hottest piece of tech news in cycling right now, Shimano’s launch this week of the latest iteration of its 105 groupset, which from now on will be electronic with no mechanical version available. We also sit down with psychologist Dr Ian Walker who explains why, despite the soaring cost of fuel, human nature presents a huge barrier to weaning motorists off cars.
The cost-of-living crisis has been one of the big stories in the mainstream media in recent weeks, and much of the focus has been on the rocketing price of fuel and how that is hitting motorists in the pocket.
To many of you reading this, one solution to reduce those motoring costs will be obvious – ditch the car for shorter or unnecessary journeys, and switch to cycling, walking or public transport instead.
But as Dr Walker, environmental psychology professor at the University of Surrey – not to mention record-breaking ultracyclist explains – trying to get motorists to choose active travel choices, or encouraging healthier diets to tackle rising levels of obesity isn’t as simple as launching a PR campaign with a catchy slogan because, fundamentally, humans are creatures of habit.
We got in touch with Ian, who has reviewed kit for road.cc in the past after a Twitter thread he wrote earlier this month in which he explained why habit was such a big obstacle to bringing about behavioural change in people caught our eye.
“This whole business of just how do you help people adopt different behaviours is something that me and my colleagues spend our whole professional lives dealing with,” he told us..
“If you think about it, people also deal with this in domains like health – if you're trying to get people to adopt healthier lifestyles or give up smoking, or drink less, or things like that, it's kind of the same question.
“Simply asking people to do new things, doesn't work very well. You know, if you just says people have you considered being healthier, have you considered eating more fruits, and veg, it just doesn't work.
“Because it's one thing to say oh look petrol's gone up 5p yesterday. It's going to have another 2p today. But the problem is we have this phenomenon of habits which gets in the way of these translating into behaviour change.”
He highlights that habits aren’t necessarily bad – not spending five minutes wondering what to have for breakfast each day when you always end up having the same thing anyway saves you 35 minutes a week is the example he cites.
But in terms of encouraging people to drive less – something the government is actively trying to promote, with the new body Active Travel England taking shape under Chris Boardman – he maintains that breaking the habit in the first place is crucial.
“It's not going to be a campaign,” Ian says. “It's not something where you can have the Prime Minister standing up and saying, ‘Okay, for the next three months, we're all going to be cycling to work’. That's not necessarily going to work. What you need is kind of like a dedicated team to be able to track and then put in these interventions at the correct time.”
He adds: “Whether it's people or whether it's the physical environment or even the legal system, they all make some things easy and they all make some things hard and at the moment, unfortunately, most of the time people, physical, environment, legal, environment, media, they all make driving very easy and they all make not driving quite hard.”

Which is one of the reasons why we need systemic change, before individual change can happen.

I certainly can't disagree with that, especially the media thing. I was recently contacted by the BBC complaints section, which was reviewing old, unresolved complaints, and they got back to me about one of mine about their cycling coverage. They apologised for the long wait and then gave me a list of all the cycling stories they'd covered, not one of which explained the benefits of switching from driving to cycling. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/topics/cjmzgwm35xkt Meanwhile, I'm utterly sick of their relentless coverage of electric cars.
Then there's a prog on R4 "Money Box Live" which looked at ways of saving money by cancelling your gym subscription but still keeping fit, the answer to which is so bleedin' obvious that surely they had to feature cycling at the start, the middle and the end. They did eventually mention it, but only because I sent in a detailed email explaining the benefits, but the presenter then damned it with faint praise by saying it was dangerous and that you should only do it where it's safe. The BBC is, of course, famous for it's unrelenting propaganda about helmets, which is guaranteed to deter people from cycling.
It's not just the BBC, and I can't recall any other media giving what I would consider reasonable coverage of cycling as transport and its effects on health, wealth, obesity, congestion, pollution, climate change etc.
The media in the UK is incontravertibly biased against cycling and they deliberately deter people from cycling.
The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) helps to drive growth, enrich lives and promote Britain abroad.
So DCMS is responsible for regulating the UK Media, both mainstream and social, to defeat the toxic attitudes and promote active travel in partnership with the Health and Transport departments. #VisionZero #TravelKind
Since women are under-represented in cycling this is also a diversity and inclusion problem. #WhereIBelong
We need to engage our elected representatives to highlight the urgency and severity of this issue, and the opportunity it provides to deliver the Active Travel objective.
... minister: Nadine Dorries. She's certainly claimed the BBC are "elitist" but I'm not sure that helps with cycling. She's challenged a lack of female representation times back but is essentially a conservative Christian. I'd question how far she's going to push for diversity. Currently on record on the side of "no trans atheletes competing against cis athletes, full stop".

In summary - no better than the conservative mainstream. We won't see (good) ideas and she's not going to be part of the solution. It's unlikely the department will do otherwise under her tenure.
