Farmer puts yellow box on a pole to curb drivers speeding along a road, and it works

Quite the car-dominated main page in the Hereford Times today
The A40 speeding article contains a graphic showing that speeding there doubled from 2019-22.
Broken down lorry, car damaged by house. 4.5 miles of road where it would be quicker to cycle.

Traders plea 'save our town' as park charges set to be introduced in Midsomer Norton
Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg feared the charges 'will suck blood out of the local economy'
Sean [Dudden of Dustland Fairytale Antiques] said "trade has fallen in recent weeks due to the announcement of parking charges and other traders have similar experiences. He added residents were frustrated that Midsomer Norton Town Council was not involved in the plans.
He added: “It is about democracy and respect for traders, customers and residents in the town. “We have a park charge-free oasis in Somerset where people can enjoy the town without Big Brother coming over and slapping on signs. The people here are lovely, but it is an area that needs to be treated with respect.

Driver wants parking restrictions (for other drivers) to be stricter. The cracks are starting to appear.
Parking space shortage in these Hereford city streets

Colour me unsurprised after the Wales experience : Tory staff running network of anti-Ulez Facebook groups riddled with racism and abuse

Good on him, he might be out of pocket by £100, but he still has a visual pun sense of humour.
Driver fumes at Bristol Airport three-point turn fine and says he won't return

You fear it because you don't understand it
Somewhere in Australia.
I 'm not bothering with the twitter link as the comments are all about jealousy and necessity apart from one gem
The oversize front bull-bar is to protect the vehicle fom stray elephants, rhinos and water buffalos found on the highway, and from bollards, barriers and barricades, buildings and bulldozers it may encounter offroad."
Road closure in Watlington will create 10-mile diversion
People in a Norfolk village will be forced on a 10-mile diversion through three neighbouring villages just to get to the shop, doctor's office and playground this week.
Edward Travers, 41, who lives in Watlington, is angered by the extent of the disruption. "This will affect more than half of the village's residents," he said. "It has not been thought through properly.
"People living on the train station side will have to take a 10-mile diversion to get to the A10 which will add about another 15 minutes just to go what is effectively only two miles away.
"It will also affect the school busses as they start their run from the station but they won't be able to pick up children from the other side of the closure and get them to school on time."

10 miles diversion, you say? Well, challenge accepted. The official diversion into the village comes out as 7.5 miles on my mapping app.
From the farthest flung (westerly) end of Station Road into the centre of the Watlington is 1.2 miles, tops. Not sure the One.Network is accurately showing the extent of the road closure, so I've hazarded a guess in red and let's assume no-one is allowed though by any travel means.
With a little ingenuity, there's a cycling/ walking route (blue) through the houses to the north of Station Road for what looks to be the village centre, and plenty of options to the south for the medical centre and school.
Or it could it be Edward is whingeing because he'll have to tackle some wriggley unclassified roads to get to the A10 just to the east of the village?
Ashford Borough Council warden gives funeral car parking ticket during service for war hero at St Mildred’s Church, Tenterden
“On appeal of this PCN, we can confirm that it has been cancelled.
“We appreciate that this must have been a very sad and upsetting time for family and friends attending the service and if our actions have caused any further upset then we are sorry for that.”

Castle Fields car park extension in Tonbridge abandoned but charges remain on Sundays and Martin Square in Larkfield and Bailey Bridge in Aylesford
A blow-by-blow account of a Council meeting here. The privilege of car ownership results in people saying the strangest things.
Kay Sinclair told the cabinet that 27 businesses had hosted the petition because they were all concerned about the adverse effect the extra charges would have on custom.
She said the charges would “devastate the High Street and be the death of the community.”
Graham Simmonds told the council that by ignoring the strong public opposition to the charges, the council was giving the impression that it didn’t care about its voters and that “democracy was dead.”

Nine out of ten councils do not plan to increase parking bay sizes
https://twitter.com/autocar/status/1785897039051501587
Standard off-street parking bays measure 2.40 metres wide by 4.80 metres long, and seven out of the top 10 best-selling car brands in the UK last year produce cars that exceed this length.
To make matters worse, five UK councils already impose maximum length restrictions on vehicles, putting the drivers of many big-selling models at risk of receiving fines when using council-run facilities.
War on Motorists !
Got to say I looked at the comments section with some dread but.... most people on their are in support of the marathon and frankly could not believe that people couldn't plan their day around a little bit of a road closure.
Well done Mancs. You seem sensible people on the whole.
the irony of a 4x4 suv driver complaining about less than perfect tarmac
It feels odd, like it didn't happen odd, to recall petrol almost hit £2 a litre 2 years ago.
Name anything else that's dropped in price by 25% in the last 2 years ?
Fake news. It's only cyclists who ignore no entry.
And we share the roads with this twat.
Bang him up!
"If dammised can with pot holes in clame u can"
I was very, very drunk !
Brilliant headline - for a change.
Yep, it's official - reds under the, er, bonnet
Chinese 'connected' cars are a national security threat, says Biden
China's automakers don't sell in America, but the Feds are still going to investigate whether they're a threat
https://www.theregister.com/2024/02/29/chinese_connected_cars_are_a/?td=...
There is also a national security twist as Senator Brown claims that data collected by the sensors and cameras in Chinese EVs could pose a threat. "China does not allow American-made electric vehicles near their official buildings. To allow their vehicles freedom to travel throughout the United States would be foolish and highly dangerous," he stated.
... in Germany and elsewhere that a ban on Chinese EVs could backfire (doesn't quite win the internet today, but I liked it)

Obviously can't be trusted, antisocial, ban motor vehicles...
Ah but taking pictures of things to defy the man (avoid a fine) is righteous. Taking pictures of people to grass on them to the cops (perhaps because you have feared for your life previously) is ...
Well, OK, perhaps if you're an elderly lady being harrased by antisocial yoof (and sometimes the odd "not from round 'ere" reference slips out) ... but pretty much any other time it's bang out of order.
Heard more of this "snitching on people" on the Beeb (Radio 4, "Antisocial" today - only caught the start tho). I think the nuisance wasn't that everything went unchallenged, it's just that because a few obvious issues were picked up on other things like "the whole premise of the argument" seem to get a pass.
Usual nonsense in the comments
"I understand his frustration but he leaves himself open to litigation. If a motorist, speeding or otherwise, reacts in a way which can be proven to have caused an accident then I'm afraid that this chap may find himself in front of the beak."
Yeah just block the footway mr policeman, that won't increase risk for pedestrians.
Are they incapable of parking somewhere safe ?
been a popular recent theme amongst the local papers, theyre all owned by the same group, its like they get an idea for a story and just keep copy, pasting and repeating.
10miles nothing though, how about 70 https://www.eadt.co.uk/news/24284043.70-mile-diversion-a12-remains-place...
So according to the caption on the picture, the vehicle that got ticketed was parking illegally and so was correctly ticketed?
Because it's a marathon and not a bike ride.
Conti GP5000s?
That he's doing his utmost to make worse still with his stupid unnecessary vehicle.
Showing such disrespect towards the judge before sentencing doesn't seem to be the most intelligent of moves.
Or writing in from the 14th century?
